Dr. Koç is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and in the National Magnetic Resonance Research Center (UMRAM), and he leads Koc Lab at Bilkent University.

Dr. Koç received the B.S. degree in electrical and electronics engineering from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey, in 2005 and then moved to Stanford University, CA, USA for graduate studies. He obtained the M.S. degree in electrical engineering in 2007, the M.S. degree in management science and engineering in 2009, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2011, all from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA. He also holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree in Law from the Faculty of Law, Ankara University, Turkey.

Dr. Koç holds the Associate Professor (“Docent”) title from the Interuniversity Council of the Republic of Turkey. He is a Senior Member of IEEE.

He worked at ASELSAN Inc., Turkey and served in the founding team of researchers who founded ASELSAN Research Center from ground-up. He founded and served as the manager of Artificial Intelligence and Information Technologies Research Program Dept. of ASELSAN Research Center. He taught part-time at the Middle East Technical University, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

In August 2019, Dr. Koç joined Bilkent University as a full-time faculty member.

Dr. Koç has authored or coauthored over 60 research papers, 1 book chapter and 4 issued patents. He has served as a reviewer for numerous prestigious journals including IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE Signal Processing Letters, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs, IEEE Access, Natural Language Engineering, ACM Transactions on Asian and Low-Resource Language Information Processing (TALLIP), Optics Letters, Optics Express, Applied Optics, Signal Processing – Elsevier, Digital Signal Processing – Elsevier, Signal, Image and Video Processing – Springer, Journal of Optical Society of America – A (JOSA A), IET Signal Processing, International Journal of Electronics, Computers and Electronics in Agriculture – Elsevier. He also served as a scientific book proposal reviewer for the international publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

His research interests are in machine learning and signal processing that extend into natural language processing and graph signal processing.

Students

PhD Students

Emre Mumcuoğlu

Emre is an PhD student in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering department of Bilkent University. He is a language nerd that is interested in Natural Language Processing. His focus is on applications of NLP to law, especially Turkish law. He is currently working on developing prediction and information retrieval sytems on Turkish legal texts.

MS Students

Ceyhun Emre Öztürk

Ceyhun is currently a MS student at the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University. He is currently working on Natural Language Processing applications on Turkish legal texts and Gaussian word embeddings. He also has work experience in simulation and modeling engineering.

Ömer Musa Battal

Musa is a MS student in EE department at Bilkent University. His research interests include improving explainability of word embeddings, and detecting and mitigating bias in legal context. He is currently working on possible use of sememes for improving explainability in word embedings.

Nurullah Sevim

Nurullah is a MS student in EE department at Bilkent University. He is interested in Natural Language Processing and its applications. His current research work is on investigating bias in natural language corpora.

Tuna Alikaşifoğlu

Tuna is a MS student at the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University. He received his BS degree from the same department. He is interested in digital signal processing and image processing in the context of graph signal processing.

Emirhan Koç

Emirhan is a MS student at the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University. He received his BS degree from the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Sabancı University. He is interested in signal processing, machine learning and deep learning.

Arda Can Aras

Arda is a MS student in EEE department at Bilkent University. His research interests include adopting Graph Neural Network models to Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications. He has also work experience in the legal NLP domain.

Undergraduate Students

Ayberk Yarkın Yıldız

Yarkın is a senior year undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University. He is currently working on software implementation and technical extensions on Time Series Predictions using RNN and Transformer Models.

İrem Şanlı

İrem is a senior year undergraduate student in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering department at Bilkent University. Her research interests are Natural Language Processing (NLP), linguistics and cognitive psychology. Also, she is a passionate language learner. She is currently working on the operationalization of Basic-Level categories in NLP, Gaussian Embeddings and Entailment Detection in NLP.

Abdullah Özüm Düzgün

Özüm is a senior year undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University. His research interests are Digital Signal Processing and Graph Signal Processing.

Doğa Diren

Doğa is a senior Electrical and Electronics Engineering student who has a deep interest in language learning and natural language processing. She is fluent in three languages: English, Turkish and French. And, aspires to be just as skillful in NLP.

Ecem Şimşek

Ecem is a senior year undergraduate student in the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University. She is interested in the applications of Graph Signal Processing and Machine Learning.
